So, What About Those Wise Men…

All these years I have been put off by how we retell this part of the story surrounding Jesus’ birth. Without taking any part of the miracle of Jesus’ birth away, I have a much deeper and greater understanding of the magi and how important it is that they came to worship the newborn King of the Jews.
Last week I was in a place where the stars shine so vividly. Every night I watched as the star closest to the moon was in a slightly different place in the sky.
Now, I don’t know if the star the magi followed to Bethlehem “shone both day and night”, or if it stayed in a fixed position over the house where Jesus was on the night of his birth until the magi’s visit. But there are so many great clues that we seem to overlook every year.
As I was able to show with pictures yesterday, the stable area is part of the house. And vs. 11 says that when the magi entered the house they found the baby with His mother and they prostrated themselves (lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward) and worshipped him.
Another thing I pointed out yesterday was that Luke’s Gospel is very specific about the fact that Jesus’ parents did everything for Him and for Mary according to Torah (the Law). That means that Mary could not travel until her 40 days of uncleanness were completed. Scripture doesn’t say the magi warned Joseph. It states that they were warned not to return to Jerusalem, and that Joseph was warned in a dream to flee to Egypt after the magi left. This tells me that Jesus was at least 2 months old when the magi found Him (read at Luke 2:39). Still, the point is that the magi came to see, bless, honor and worship Yeshua/Jesus, the newly born King, not necessarily one who was born within a few hours, but one who was still a baby. After all, even Herod couldn’t pinpoint Yeshua’s age since he ruthlessly killed every little boy who was 2 years old and younger.
But after doing some studying, I don’t think when they came is what is important about the magi. Isaiah 60 is very clear about where the caravans of camels and wealth came from — not from the Far East, as in the Orient, like the song states. But from the Middle East — Father Abraham’s other sons, Ishmael, Midian and the 5 other male children born to him after Sarah’s death. Matthew 15:24 states, “But he answered and said, ‘I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’” It is so very clear to me that Jesus was speaking about all of Abraham’s sons. These tribes are from whom the magi came. The woman from Canaan (Matthew 15:22–28) and the Samaritan woman (John 4:5–26), considered Gentiles by the Jews, were descendants of Father Abraham by interracial marriage. Yeshua came to bring all of Abraham’s descendants the Good News, first, then to the Greek and to the uttermost parts of the world.
How exciting! How grateful I am for this new insight! How thankful I am for John 10:16, “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one Shepherd.”

The Gospel of Matthew is the only one of the four canonical gospels to mention the magi. Matthew reports that they came “from the east” to worship the “king of the Jews”.[2] The gospel never mentions the number of magi. Their identification as kings in later Christian writings is probably linked to Isaiah 60:1–6, which refers to “kings [coming] to the brightness of your dawn” bearing “gold and frankincense”.[5] Further identification of the magi with kings may be due to Psalm 72:11, “May all kings fall down before him”.[6][7]

Son of Ismael of the Israelites. A Kedarite kingdom emerges on the eastern flank of the Levant, in eastern Syria and present day Jordan. Many small states have arisen by this time during the period of the Assyrian decline, with the Kedarite state being perhaps one of the last to emerge.

Midianite, in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), member of a group of nomadic tribes related to the Israelites and most likely living east of the Gulf of Aqaba in the northwestern regions of the Arabian Desert. They engaged in pastoral pursuits, caravan trading, and banditry, and their main contacts with the Israelites were from the period of the Exodus (13th century BCE) through the period of the Judges (12th–11th century BCE). According to the Book of Judges, the Israelite chieftain Gideon drove the Midianites into western Palestine, after which they largely disappeared from the biblical narrative.
2According to the Book of Genesis, the Midianites were descended from Midian, who was the son of the Hebrew patriarch Abraham by the latter’s second wife, Keturah. Jethro, priest-leader of the Midianite subtribe known as the Kenites, and his daughter Zipporah, a wife of Moses, influenced early Hebrew thought: it was Yahweh, the lord of the Midianites, who was revealed to Moses as the God of the Hebrews.
The Midianites traditionally have been identified as Ishmaelites, in part because of an unclear passage in Genesis (37:28) that refers to the traders to whom Joseph was sold by his brothers as both Midianites and Ishmaelites. In addition, the story of Gideon in Judges contains a verse (8:24) that includes an apparent interpolation identifying the Midianites as Ishmaelites.

The name Eifah means “Darkness, gloom. The name is borne in the Bible by a grandson of Abraham” and is of “Hebrew” origin. [no longer are they in darkness and gloom because The LORD has shone them His Light.]

Sheva = “Jehovah contends”. Judaite, son of Caleb by his concubine Maachah and grandson of Hezron. [yes, the LORD is contending for all of Abraham’s descendants. He is not a man that He should lie, blessed be HE!]

Chacham is Hebrew for “sage” or “scholar” and is also translated as “wise one or wise man”. The pl. is Chachamim.

One more link: the Midianites are the group of people that Joseph’s brothers (the Tribes of Israel) sold him to, who then traded him as a servant to Egypt. Joseph is a foreshadow of Messiah in the Old Testament. Isn’t it wonderful and awe-inspiring that when the magi left, Joseph (Jesus’ earthly dad) was instructed to flee from the Land of Israel and go to the land of Egypt? And all to fulfill Scriptures that were written about Him hundreds of years before His birth!

[“Mangers are animal feeding troughs but in ancient Israel they were made of stone – not what you would see in a modern day nativity scene. Not comfortable, but great for protection. That’s why those who were experts in this matter, the priests, would put their newborn lambs in them for protection. But not just any lambs, the unblemished perfect lambs that were used in the sacrifice for sins. And Bethlehem, where Jesus was born was FAMOUS for their UNBLEMISHED LAMBS used for the sacrifice. These lambs had to be perfect so they would wrap them tightly in cloth and lie them in mangers to keep them safe. This is exactly why the only time the word “manger” is mentioned in Jesus’ birth story, it is being told to shepherds. In Luke 2 it says “This will be a SIGN for you, you will find a baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.” The shepherds would have understood this powerful parallel! THEY KNEW what the cloth and the manger meant! This baby would be THE PERFECT LAMB OF GOD! The Messiah who would sacrifice His life for the sins of the whole world. He wasn’t just a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger, He was GOD: perfect, sinless and holy, humbling Himself to become the perfect sacrifice to reconcile us back to Himself!”]

15 No sooner had the angels left them and gone back into heaven than the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go over to Beit-Lechem and see this thing that has happened, that Adonai has told us about.” 16 Hurrying off, they came and found Miryam and Yosef, and the baby lying in the feeding trough. 17 Upon seeing this, they made known what they had been told about this child; 18 and all who heard were amazed by what the shepherds said to them. 19 Miryam treasured all these things and kept mulling them over in her heart. 20 Meanwhile, the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen; it had been just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time for his b’rit-milah, he was given the name Yeshua, which is what the angel had called him before his conception.

[At the period of Jesus’s birth, the actual Jewish practice of circumcision was for the operation to be performed at home, usually by the father.]

22 When the time came for their purification according to the Torah of Moshe,they took him up to Yerushalayim to present him to Adonai 23 (as it is written in the Torah of Adonai, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to Adonai”[a]) 24 and also to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young pigeons,[b] as required by the Torah of Adonai.

[The Book of Leviticus states that a mother should be considered unclean for 40 days after giving birth to a boy and for 80 days after giving birth to a girl. So Mary would not have been allowed to travel outside of the house they were staying in until her time of purification was completed. And then her first place to go was to Jerusalem to present herself for the cleanness ceremony written in Levitical Law.]

25 There was in Yerushalayim a man named Shim‘on. This man was a tzaddik, he was devout, he waited eagerly for God to comfort Isra’el, and the Ruach HaKodesh was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Ruach HaKodesh that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah of Adonai. 27 Prompted by the Spirit, he went into the Temple courts; and when the parents brought in the child Yeshua to do for him what the Torah required, 28 Shim‘on took him in his arms, made a b’rakhah to God, and said, 29 “Now, Adonai, according to your word, your servant is at peace as you let him go; 30 for I have seen with my own eyes your yeshu‘ah, 31 which you prepared in the presence of all peoples — 32 a light that will bring revelation to the Goyim and glory to your people Isra’el.”

33 Yeshua’s father and mother were marvelling at the things Shim‘on was saying about him. 34 Shim‘on blessed them and said to the child’s mother, Miryam, “This child will cause many in Isra’el to fall and to rise, he will become a sign whom people will speak against; 35 moreover, a sword will pierce your own heart too. All this will happen in order to reveal many people’s inmost thoughts.” 36 There was also a prophet named Hannah Bat-P’nu’el, of the tribe of Asher. She was a very old woman — she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage 37 and had remained a widow ever since; now she was eighty-four. She never left the Temple grounds but worshipped there night and day, fasting and praying. 38 She came by at that moment and began thanking God and speaking about the child to everyone who was waiting for Yerushalayim to be liberated.

39 When Yosef and Miryam had finished doing everything required by the Torah of Adonai, they returned to the Galil, to their town Natzeret.

A Letter from Jesus About Christmas

Dear Children,

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season.

How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own. I don’t care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth, just GET ALONG AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Now, having said that, let Me go on. If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn’t allow a scene depicting My birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santas and snowmen and put in a small Nativity scene on your own front lawn. If all My followers did that there wouldn’t be any need for such a scene on the town square because there would be many of them all around town.

Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a holiday tree, instead of the Christmas tree. It was I who made all trees. You can remember Me anytime you see any tree. Decorate a grape vine if you wish!

If you want to give Me a present in remembrance of My birth here is my wish list. Choose something from it:

1.  Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way My birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are terribly afraid and lonely this time of year. I know, they tell Me all the time.

2.  Visit someone in a nursing home. Not just during Christmas time, but all through the year. You don’t have to know them personally. They just need to know that someone cares about them.

3.  Instead of writing the president complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sends out this year, why don’t you write and tell him that you’ll be praying for him and his family?

4.  Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you can’t afford and they don’t need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of My birth, and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that I love them.

5.  Pick someone that has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her.

6.  Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don’t know who that person is, try giving everyone you meet a warm smile; it could make the difference….

7.  Instead of nit picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren’t allowed to wish you a “Merry Christmas,” that doesn’t keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store didn’t make so much money on that day they would close and let their employees spend the day at home.

8.  If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary—especially one who takes My love and Good News to those who have never heard My name.

9.  Here’s a good one. There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no “Christmas” tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don’t know them, buy some food and a few gifts and give them to the Salvation Army or some other charity which believes in Me and they will make the delivery for you.

10.  Finally, if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to Me, then behave like a Christian. Let people know by your actions and words that you are one of mine. (John 13:35 )

Don’t forget; I am God and can take care of Myself. Just love Me. I’ll take care of all the rest. And do have a most blessed Christmas with all those whom you love and remember –
